Person called saying they needed to "verify a payment" made with my "visa OR mastercard". Then asked about some bogus payment made, and when I challenged asking where they were calling from and who they were, they hung up.

Same number claiming to be from National Australia Bank re a payment from my account. When I mentioned I didn't have a NAB account it changed ti payment from a Commonwealth account to NAB for international transfer. They couldn't give me a valid return number or reference number for the transaction so I could call back. Luck I work in finance.
